Tinea Pedis Treatment

Tinea Pedis foot is a fungal infection of the skin of the foot. It is also known as Athlete's Foot. Dermatophytes are the fungal agents responsible for these infections. These infections can be acute or chronic. Tinea Pedis is the most common form of fungal infection. Acute Tinea Pedis usually has symptoms such as itching, burning and blisters, while chronic Tinea Pedis can be with out these symptoms.

In many cases, it is felt that the individual has acquired a case of eczema or dermatitis. And the first step is always to apply an over the counter hydrocortisone cream. In all cases of tinea pedis, hydrocortisone cream will make the symptoms worse. Therefore in such a scenario, it is best to see a physician rather than fool around with any more home made recipes.

The fungus may cause dry, cracked, itchy skin, as well as blisters and wet, sore areas in between the toes. In advanced cases, burning pain may also be felt. One may have only some of these symptoms, or one may have all of them. This infection can have a wide range of severity. The skin infection can even spread to the nails. Generally, the infection is limited to the foot, but if untreated it may persist for years, with symptoms that may disappear and then reappear.

The cleft between the third, fourth, and fifth toes are the most frequent sites of affectation. On initial observation, you may describe it as a moist skin that easily peels upon rubbing and scratching which may then result to uncomfortable skin splits or fissures. Upon continuous neglect, thinking it might heal on its own, your feet turns from generally mildly inflamed to severely inflamed secondary to concomitant bacterial infection.

If jock itch is present and is a mild case, your doctor may start the ringworm treatment with over-the-counter anti-fungal ointments, lotion, powder or spray. For serious conditions resorting to a prescription type medication may be required. Usually the anti-fungal medications work well- either azoles or allylamines.

Tinea capitis is ringworm of the scalp. A visual diagnosis is extremely difficult for determining the apparent type of fungus. A skin scraping by your health care provider is preferred. Medications may include terbinafine hydrochloride, grisofulvin or Lamisil. Washing your hair with a medicated shampoo will also be recommended in most cases.

The ringworm treatment does vary depending upon the above mentioned areas of the body and the present severity of the fungus on the skin area. Ringworm cures can vary between prescription types of medications to antifungal creams. (over the counter products are available) Ringworm is very contagious. If you see a ring shaped rash with normal like skin in the center, than an antifungal cream will probable work best for your situation.

Jock itch gets its name because it is common in people who sweat a lot, like athletes. The medical name for all of these types of fungal infections is a tinea infection, and the medical name for jock itch is tinea cruris (pronounced: tih -nee-uh krur -us). It also often occurs in people who are overweight, but anyone can get the infection. Jock itch may be contagious. Some kinds of fungi live on damp surfaces, like the floors in public showers or locker rooms.
